In their own words
Christine Ammon — on what makes this work rewarding
What's a project or problem you're proudest of solving?
"A client reached out for guidance on enforcing in-office expectations in a hybrid work setting. I consulted their handbook, read through their policies, and was able to ground the manager in the language, provide next steps, and propose ideas for future updates. The client was visibly relieved to know how to proceed, and she proactively asked for a follow-up meeting, which made me feel like our check-ins are genuinely valuable for her."
Aric S. Alvarez — on why he focuses on benefits and leave
What kept pulling you toward employee benefits and leaves of absence?
"I kept seeing the same thing: employees paying toward insurance with no idea what they were entitled to, leaving money on the table in a retirement plan, or avoiding workers' comp because they feared getting in trouble. People are often wary of HR, and they deserve an advocate who helps them use what they already have. The thread through all of it is simple: a healthy, informed employee is an asset to the business."
Christine Ammon — on HR priorities for small businesses
If a business owner could only fix one HR thing this year, what would you tell them?
"Employee engagement should be a priority, but it requires sustained time and effort. Communicate regularly and transparently about the state of the business, the organization's values, and what success looks like. As a business grows, sustaining employees' emotional connection to the organization and their work can drive greater success."
Aric S. Alvarez — on the most common HR mistake he sees
What's the one HR mistake small businesses make over and over?
"Making decisions based on emotion or personal relationships instead of sound HR principles. Tolerating something for years can quietly become a practice you can't defend later. The mistake is letting familiarity or sympathy drive decisions that should be grounded in consistency and documentation. That's exactly the kind of thing we help clients untangle."
